Athletes and coaches representing 10 different sports, plus a thoroughbred horse trainer and a media celebrity, make up the 2020 Castro Valley Sports Hall of Fame class.
Former Laney and Chabot College baseball coach Don Christiansen, current Castro Valley High track and field coach Dooney Jones and Castro Valley Track Club founder and coach Jim Phillips represent the coaching fraternity in the latest class of 16.
Athletes include soccer star Miranda Nild, swimming standout Carson Sand, team handball Olympian Steve Goss, tennis professional Jamie Pawid Haas, basketball phenom Denise Noleroth Bunger, track and cross country stalwart Calvin Gaziano, golf champion Matt Kern, football running back John Willits, All-American distance runner Ayla Granados, all-around athlete Amanda Medrano and the late cross country and track standout Jack Welch.
Rounding out the star-studded class are veteran thoroughbred trainer Bob Hess, Sr., and well-known print and broadcast journalist Monte Poole.
Nominations for the Hall of Fame were solicited from the public and a seven-person committee appointed by the Castro Valley Sports Foundation has met regularly for the past eight months as part of the selection process.
The next Hall of Fame class will be inducted on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at a banquet ceremony at the event center at Redwood Canyon. For tickets, please contact Patrick Ryken at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Castro Valley Sports Hall of Fame has inducted a new class every two years since 2010. Plaques recognizing the previous Hall of Fame inductees are on display at Knudsen’s Ice Creamery on Castro Valley Blvd.
